ASHP Foundation Research Grant Programs Now Accepting Applications

The ASHP Foundation is currently accepting applications to the following research grant programs:

Federal Services Junior Investigator Research Grant: Apply by January 9, 2009
Supported by a grant from Abbott

The Federal Services Junior Investigator Research Grant Program provides funding to new investigators for practice-based research related to medication adherence and persistence in individuals with either HIV/AIDS, dyslipidemia, autoimmune diseases, psychiatric disorders or stages 3 and 4 renal disease who receive care in a Federal health care facility. Two $25,000 grants will be awarded. The deadline to submit applications is January 9, 2009.

Junior Investigator Research Grant: Apply by February 13, 2009

The Junior Investigator Research Grant Program supports practice-based research in medication use conducted by pharmacist new investigators. Practice-based research affects a wide range of medication-use topics, including program evaluations; patient education; patient outcomes and effectiveness of medication therapy; health care quality; medication use in minority, elderly and other special populations; medication costs and financing; program evaluations; and access to medications. Two $20,000 grants are available. The deadline to submit applications is February 13, 2009.

Medication Safety Team Grant: Apply by April 1, 2009
Supported by Omnicell, Inc.

The ASHP Foundation’s Medication Safety Team Grant Program is now accepting applications. The program supports research related to the use of barcode scanning technology at the point of medication administration to enhance the safe use of medications. This grant program will be available to research teams composed of a combination of pharmacists, physicians, nurses or informatics experts. The research teams must include a pharmacist as a co-principal investigator. The proposed research must involve the use of barcode scanning technology at the point of medication administration. Two $40,000 grants will be awarded. The deadline to submit completed applications is April 1, 2009.

AJHP Series on Research Fundamentals
The American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy is publishing “Research Fundamentals,” a series of articles that covers important topics in pharmacy research. These include valid research design, appropriate data collection and analysis, application of research findings in practice, and publication of research results. Articles in this series have been solicited and reviewed by guest editors Lee Vermeulen, M.S., and Almut Winterstein, Ph.D. Visit the ASHP Foundation’s online Research Resource Center to read and download the articles.

Residency Research Tips
The 2008 Residency Research Tips for residents and residency program faculty are now available. The tips are composed of practical suggestions for successful completion of pharmacy resident research. Topics include timeline development, writing specific aims and hypothesis statements, power calculations and statistical analysis, data presentation, developing surveys, working with the Institutional Review Board, and grant development.
